My name is Kelly Dodge. I’ve lived in Carson City for about 30 years. Back in the early 90’s I was attending a church that needed a sound person. They asked for volunteers. I had some music background and was pretty technology savvy, so I signed up. I went through a crash training course, and started doing sound weekly.
Over time, I learned a lot about how it all worked. I took classes. I went to seminars. I read tons of stuff. And since we had a practice and a performance every week with pretty much the same group, I got to experiment a lot.
As time went by, I was responsible for upgrades and changes. We recorded a couple songs on an old 4 track. We completely upgraded the sound system. And then we upgraded again.
Eventually, I had set up a digital sound system that mixed and recorded all the individual tracks, complete with a separate station for monitors. I was mixing worship almost every week, and then taking the tracks and building recordings off of them. We ran concerts that had anywhere from 50 to 750 kids. We did regional touring acts, local acts, and even groups who were playing their first gigs. I like to say I’ve done everything from garage bands to Grammy winners.
I started doing sound for the Carson Community Center. I helped several other churches setup and fix their systems. I worked for another major provider in Reno and did larger shows, including Huey Lewis and the News.
Along the way, I’ve trained dozens of sound people, some of which went on to a career in sound.
Sometime mid 2015 I was talking to someone who was having an issue with a sound system they were responsible for. I gave them some ideas that hopefully helped, but I didn’t have a good way for them to really follow up with me. I decided then it was time to at least get some business cards going. That’s basically when KDSoundCo was born.
Each summer I help out with an event called Jazz and Beyond in August. Historically, another guy provided the sound system each year and I operated it. Early 2015, there was concern that the system wasn’t going to be available. So I started putting together a system just in case. We ended up using both systems, giving the festival an overall upgrade in sound. Since them, I’ve continued to work on my system, making it bigger and better.
In the fall of 2015, I was asked to help a local band put together a demo album. I agreed to help them out, and started down the road to more serious recording. And now I have others asking for my expertise.
I’ve been around for a while, but I don’t know everything and I don’t have everything. What I do have going for me is that I care. I’ll do whatever I can to make things the best possible. Call me at (775) 772-6011 or email me at kelly@kdsoundco.com and see if I can help you out.
